Malmo is the capital of the Swedish southern most province Skane and is the third largest city in Sweden. It is also a commercial centre for the western part of Scania.
Since 1872 Malmo has promoted itself as the city of green spaces. It has true lots of lovely, landscaped parks. In one of the city's most important green spaces, Folkets Park, the amusement park's range of attractions, restaurants and stages are combined with the opportunity of putting on out door events. Folkets Park is a meeting place for people of all ages which bears the positive mark of Malmo's cultural multiplicity.
The most popular attraction is Stortoget, Malmo's city centre square surrounded by the Old Town. On the square you will see King Charles X's statue. The square Stortorget was built in 1536 and soon turned into Scandinavia's the largest city square. The bronze water sculpture on Malmo's Stortorget depicts the location of the old city well.
Malmo also has a big variety of shopping malls in the city centre as well as in the outskirts of the city. The main square for shopping is Stortorget and the square's smaller neighbour Lilla Torg the Little Square. Lilla Torg is famous among other things for its outdoor cafes and bars. Most of this area is pedestrianised, so you can enjoy your shopping.
The beach Ribersborg in the western harbour, and it is a man-made shallow beach, stretching along Malmo's coast line. It is the site of Ribersborgs Kallbadhus, an open air bath opened in the 1890s, where people go swimming all year round. Despite the chilly climate, it is some times referred to as the Riviera of the North or the Swedish Riviera.
Malmo Stadium is the biggest and best-known of the out door arenas in the city, and is where Malmo FF foot ball club plays its home matches. It is also where many of the big names in athletics have competed and set world records, and where several major musical events have taken place.
The Malmohus Castle built in the 15th century and was originally built as a citadel in 1434 by Eric of Pomerania. It is now a museum but has seen its fair share of uses, including at one time in history it was a prison. Representing Renaissance design, it is Scandinavia's oldest building of this style. In side it is a museum of art, natural history, and different exhibitions all year.
