Shanghai is situated on the banks of the Yangtze River Delta in East China. Shanghai is one of the world's busiest ports, and became the largest cargo port in the world in 2005. Since 1842, the city has grown into a massive international port that has attracted people from around the globe. Shanghai, also named Hu or Shen. On Dec. 3, 2002, Shanghai succeeded in winning the bid for the sponsorship of World Expo 2010. It has also become the country's commercial and banking centre.
Shanghai has the most colourful night life in China. Shanghai's first bars were opened in Hengshan Road, and they remain more popular than any where else. It is one of the most bustling places in Shanghai. Todays nightclubs, distinct from those in the old days, have become the best places of amusement, exercise, sports and relaxation.
Shanghai is the most famous shopping place in China. Known as Oriental Paris, there are already some wonderful high class boutiques. There are department stores, shopping centres, hundred year old shops, and shops for special commodities. Super Brand Mall is one of the few big shopping malls in the Pudong Area. Qipulu is nicknamed as Cheap Road, it is famous for cheap but fashionable goods. Shanghai Old Street is famous for its antique shops, Chinese style memorabilia shops, and tea shops.
Shanghai is sea food city. The food is generally sweet and oily, and local dishes include xiao long baozi a dumplings full of broth and meat, dazha xie which is crabs, and xiefen shizitou which is pork meatballs with crab inside. You will find cheap places in Wujiang Road, and nicer places are located in Xintiandi.
Huangpu River is the largest river in Shanghai. The Huangpu's wharves are the most fascinating in China. The port handles the cargo coming out of the interior from Nanjing, Wuhan, and other Yangzi River ports. The river, yellow in colour and ice-free all the year round
Oriental Pearl TV Tower is situated next to the Huangpu river bank in Pudong Park. It is 468 meters, and the third highest TV Tower in the world. The design for the Tower incorporates eleven spheres and three gigantic columns, the highest at 350 metres Space Module, the middle at 263 and 259 metres the Sightseeing Floor, and the lowest at 90 metres the Space City. It is also possible to visit a revolving restaurant at the 267 metre level.
